A guide to understanding race classifications. The primary race categories are stakes, allowance, claiming and maiden. Stakes such as the Kentucky Derby are the highest-quality and biggest-paying races, and nearly every track has its version of these. Allowance is the next level down, and claiming is the lowest level. Maiden races are for horses that haven’t won yet.
